The Best Winter Tires for an SUV in Manitoba: Grand Cherokee, Durango, Compass and Pacifica

The most common thing we hear at the parts counter in October is some version of this: it has all wheel drive, so it will be fine on the tires it came with. It is a reasonable thought. It is also the single most expensive misunderstanding in winter driving, because all wheel drive helps an SUV get moving and does nothing at all to help it stop or turn.

So the real question is not whether your Grand Cherokee, Durango, Compass or Pacifica needs winter tires. It does. The question is how to pick the right set for a heavy family vehicle rather than for a truck or a small car, and that comes down to a few numbers on the sidewall that most tire lists never mention. Our parts department will match a set to your exact vehicle, and this post explains what they are matching and why.

Key Takeaways

  • All wheel drive is not a winter tire. It sends power to all four wheels, which helps you pull away. Stopping and steering depend entirely on the grip of the rubber, and a cold, hard all season compound has less of it.
  • Match the load index on the door placard, and match XL if your original tires carry it. A three row SUV full of people and hockey bags is a heavy vehicle, and the winter set has to carry it.
  • Minus one sizing can be a smart winter move on trims with big wheels, but only after brake clearance is confirmed. Performance brake packages often rule it out.
  • The three peak mountain snowflake is the entry ticket. It means the tire passed a packed snow traction test. It does not rank one winter tire against another.
  • A second set of wheels needs its own tire pressure sensors, or the warning lamp stays on all winter.
  • The MPI Winter Tire Program finances up to $2,000 at prime plus 2 percent, and from October 1, 2026 it covers dedicated winter tires only. We are a participating retailer.

Why All Wheel Drive Does Not Fix Winter

Here is the plain physics. All wheel drive decides where the engine's power goes. When you press the brake or turn the wheel, the engine is not part of the conversation. The four contact patches, each about the size of your hand, are the only thing between the SUV and the road, and how well they grip depends on the rubber and the tread.

Transport Canada's position is straightforward: winter tires on all four wheels improve stability, steering and braking in winter conditions. It also sets the threshold where the difference begins, at about 7 degrees Celsius. Below that, all season compounds start to stiffen and lose grip, and a winter compound stays pliable.

All wheel drive can actually make the problem harder to notice. An AWD SUV on all seasons accelerates confidently from a stop sign on packed snow, which gives the driver a sense of grip that simply is not there when the light turns red at the bottom of an icy hill. That gap between how it feels and how it stops is exactly where rear enders happen on the Trans Canada into Winnipeg on the first bad morning of the year.

We cover the drivetrain side of this in do you need 4x4 in Manitoba. The short version is that 4x4 and AWD help, and tires matter more.

What an SUV Needs That a Car Does Not

This is where an SUV is different from a compact car, and why a generic best winter tires list does not help much.

Weight. A Grand Cherokee or a Durango is a heavy vehicle before anyone climbs in, and a three row with the whole family and a weekend of gear is heavier again. Every kilogram has to be stopped by those four contact patches. That makes the load rating the first thing to get right.

Load index. The number after the size on the sidewall, like the 109 in a 265/60R18 109H, is the load index. It translates to a maximum weight per tire. Your winter set must meet or exceed the load index your vehicle was delivered with, which is listed on the tire placard in the driver door jamb. A cheaper tire in the right size but a lower load index is the wrong tire, whatever it costs.

XL, or extra load. Many SUVs come on P metric tires with an XL marking, which means the tire is built to carry more weight at a higher inflation pressure. If your originals are XL, your winter tires should be XL too. This is the detail we see missed most often on sets bought online.

Four matched tires. Transport Canada recommends winter tires in sets of four, matched in type and size. On an all wheel drive vehicle there is a second reason: the system expects all four tires to roll at close to the same diameter, so mixing brands, sizes or badly mismatched tread depths is a bad idea on any AWD SUV.

Grand Cherokee, Durango, Compass and Pacifica

We are not going to print a size chart here, and the reason is practical. The same model can leave the factory on very different tires depending on trim. The 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee alone runs from 18 inch wheels up to 21 inch wheels across the lineup, and each of those is a different winter tire conversation. The only size that matters is the one on your door placard. Here is what tends to matter on each.

Jeep Grand Cherokee. The big wheel trims are the strongest case for a separate winter wheel. A 20 or 21 inch wheel wears a low profile tire that is costly in a winter compound and does not love potholes in March. An 18 inch winter package, where brake clearance allows, is often the smarter spend. Browse our new Jeep Grand Cherokee inventory if you are comparing trims with winter in mind.

Dodge Durango. The heaviest of the four and the one most often loaded to the roof with a family and a trailer behind it. Load index and XL are the first things we check. Performance trims with large brake packages generally cannot drop a wheel size, so plan on a winter tire in the factory size. Our new Dodge Durango inventory is online if you are shopping.

Jeep Compass. Lighter, and on sensible wheel sizes, which makes it one of the least expensive vehicles in the lineup to put on a good winter set. A proper winter tire turns a Compass into a very capable little winter commuter. See our new Jeep Compass inventory.

Chrysler Pacifica. A minivan rather than an SUV, but it gets the same question and deserves the same answer, especially the all wheel drive versions. A van full of kids in a rink parking lot in February is the textbook case for braking grip over acceleration. Our new Chrysler Pacifica inventory shows what is on the lot.

Minus One Sizing, Done Properly

Minus one sizing means dropping the wheel diameter by an inch and fitting a tire with a taller sidewall so the overall diameter stays nearly the same as the original. A 20 inch factory wheel becomes an 18 or 19 inch winter wheel, for example.

Why bother. A narrower tire on a smaller wheel tends to cut through snow and slush instead of floating on it, the taller sidewall is more forgiving on frozen potholes, and smaller winter tires usually cost less than the low profile sizes on big wheels.

Three conditions, and they are not optional:

The wheel has to clear the brakes. Large brake calipers, especially on performance packages, can make a smaller wheel physically impossible. This is checked on the vehicle, not guessed from a chart.

The load index cannot go down. The replacement size still has to meet the placard.

The overall diameter has to stay close. Get this wrong and the speedometer reads wrong and the stability and AWD systems are working from bad information.

This is exactly the kind of fitment the parts counter checks before anything is ordered, and it is the difference between a winter package that works and one that comes back.

The Details That Catch People

Tire pressure sensors. Your vehicle's pressure monitoring expects a sensor in every wheel. A winter set on its own wheels without sensors will leave the warning lamp lit all season, and it also means you have no warning if a tire does go low. We can fit sensors to the winter wheels when the set is built.

Cold pressure. Tire pressure drops as the temperature falls. Set the tires to the placard pressure when they are cold, and check again after the first real cold snap.

Storage. A winter set lasts longer when it is stored properly through the summer, off the floor and out of the sun. Our post on winter tire storage covers how.

The snowflake is a floor, not a score. The three peak mountain snowflake means the tire passed a traction test on medium packed snow, with a result at least 10 percent better than a reference tire. That is the entry requirement. It says nothing about ice, and ice is often the harder problem here.

What We Mount, and What It Costs

We are not going to hand you a ranked top five. We recommend tire lines we have actually fitted to vehicles like yours and seen come back after a winter, and that list shifts with supply from season to season. Tell us the vehicle, the size on the placard, and what your winter looks like, whether that is a daily run into Winnipeg, town driving in Portage la Prairie, or gravel to the farm, and we will name two or three we would put on it and quote them.

On cost, the MPI Winter Tire Program lets eligible Manitobans finance up to $2,000 per vehicle at prime plus 2 percent, repaid over one to four years. Effective October 1, 2026, only tires designed and marketed solely for winter driving that carry the three peak mountain snowflake qualify, so all weather tires are out. We are a participating retailer, and the financing can make a proper winter package on wheels a lot easier to say yes to.

Manitoba does not require winter tires by law, which we cover in winter tires and the law in Manitoba. This is a safety and money decision, not a ticket.

When the set is ready, book the changeover before the first storm rather than after it. The week after the first snow is when every shop in the region is booked solid.

FAQs

Do I need winter tires if my SUV has all wheel drive?

Yes. All wheel drive helps you accelerate on snow by sending power to all four wheels. It does nothing for braking or steering, which depend only on tire grip. Transport Canada recommends winter tires on all four wheels because they improve stability, steering and braking in winter conditions.

What are the best winter tires for a Jeep Grand Cherokee?

The best set is a winter tire with the three peak mountain snowflake, in the size and load index on your door placard, with XL if your originals are XL. On 20 and 21 inch trims, an 18 inch winter wheel package is often the better choice if the brakes clear. We will name the specific lines we would fit after we see your trim.

Can I put smaller wheels on my SUV for winter?

Often, yes. It is called minus one sizing: a smaller wheel with a taller tire so the overall diameter stays about the same. The wheel must clear your brake calipers, the load index must not drop, and the overall diameter must stay close. Performance brake packages frequently rule it out.

What does XL mean on an SUV tire?

XL stands for extra load. An XL tire is built to carry more weight at a higher inflation pressure than a standard load tire of the same size. If your original tires are XL, your winter tires should be too.

Will my tire pressure light stay on with winter wheels?

It will if the winter wheels have no pressure sensors. The system expects a sensor in each wheel. Fitting sensors when the winter set is built keeps the lamp off and keeps the low pressure warning working.

Can I finance SUV winter tires in Manitoba?

Yes. The MPI Winter Tire Program finances up to $2,000 per vehicle for eligible Manitobans at prime plus 2 percent over one to four years. From October 1, 2026, it covers only dedicated winter tires with the three peak mountain snowflake. We are a participating retailer.

The Bottom Line

The best winter tire for your SUV is not a brand. It is the right size and load index for your trim, XL where your originals are XL, a genuine winter compound with the snowflake, four matched tires, and a wheel choice that makes sense for the brakes you have. All wheel drive is a great thing to have in January. It is just not a substitute for any of that.

Bring us your door placard and a description of your winter, and our parts department will build the set, with MPI financing applied where you qualify.
