What Colour Is Transmission Fluid?

What colour is transmission fluid? On many vehicles, automatic transmission fluid is dyed red when it is new and turns darker as it ages, first toward reddish brown and then brown. A darker shade on its own is not always trouble. Dark fluid that smells burnt, fluid that looks milky, or a fresh red spot that keeps coming back is the kind that needs a look, and you can book a transmission check with our service team rather than guess at it.

Spell it colour or color, the question is the same: is what you just saw on the driveway or the dipstick normal? The colour guide below holds for many cars and trucks with an automatic. The manual facts come from the 2022 Ram 2500 and 3500 owner's manual; a Ram 1500, a Jeep or another model year has its own manual, and its transmission and fluid can differ.

If the fluid is simply due, our guide to transmission service and what to know before you book covers what the work involves and what moves its cost.

Key Takeaways

  • New fluid is often red. On many vehicles it darkens toward brown with kilometres, so a darker shade alone is not proof of a problem.
  • A burnt smell matters more than the shade. Dark fluid that smells burnt has often run hot; book a check rather than topping up.
  • Milky fluid is a booking. The 2022 Ram 2500 and 3500 owner's manual calls for a fluid and filter change if the fluid becomes contaminated, with water for example.
  • Some trucks have no dipstick. In that 2022 manual, the eight speed has none, and an authorized dealer checks its level with special service tools.
  • Use only the fluid your manual names. That 2022 manual names a different fluid for each of its three transmissions and recommends against additives.

Healthy Transmission Fluid: Red When New, Darker With Use

On many vehicles, new automatic transmission fluid is a clear, bright red, which makes it easy to tell from engine oil and coolant under the truck. Heat and kilometres darken it, first toward reddish brown, then brown. On many fluids that gradual change is normal ageing, so read colour beside the kilometres and the maintenance plan.

Not every transmission uses the same fluid, so not every fluid starts out the same shade. The 2022 Ram 2500 and 3500 owner's manual calls for Mopar ZF 8 & 9 Speed ATF or equivalent in the eight speed behind the 6.4 litre HEMI. Behind the 6.7 litre Cummins, it calls for ATF+4 only in the 68RFE six speed, and Mopar ASRC Automatic Transmission Fluid or equivalent in the Aisin AS69RC six speed. Read the colour against the fluid your own manual names.

Brown, Dark or Burnt: What Each Colour Usually Means

Read the colour on a clean white paper towel, in daylight, and smell it before you decide anything.

What you seeWhat it often means, and what to do
Bright red, clear, no harsh smellFresh or healthy fluid on many vehicles. Keep to the maintenance plan in your owner's manual.
Reddish brown or light brown, no burnt smellOften normal ageing. Check the kilometres against your manual's maintenance plan and book a fluid service if it is due.
Dark brown or black with a burnt smellOften fluid that has run hot. Book a transmission check promptly and mention any slipping or hard shifts.
Pink and milky, cloudy or foamyCan mean water or coolant has got in. Book promptly; the 2022 Ram 2500 and 3500 manual calls for fluid and filter if the fluid is contaminated with water.
Specks, grit or a metallic sheenCan point to wear inside the transmission. Book a diagnosis before adding anything.

Smell is the part people skip. Healthy fluid smells oily. Fluid that smells scorched has usually been through more heat than it should. If the fluid is dark and the truck has also started to shift hard, flare between gears or shudder, our post on hard shifts and a slipping feel in a truck transmission helps you name the symptom before you book.

When Colour Means a Visit, Not a Top Up

A top up feels like the cheap fix. Often it is the wrong one, for three reasons.

The level may not be yours to set. For the eight speed, the 2022 Ram 2500 and 3500 owner's manual says, "An authorized dealer can check your transmission fluid level using special service tools." It adds, "If you notice fluid leakage or transmission malfunction, visit an authorized dealer immediately to have the transmission fluid level checked."

The wrong fluid does harm. The same 2022 manual cautions, "Using a transmission fluid other than the manufacturer's recommended fluid may cause deterioration in transmission shift quality and/or torque converter shudder, and will require more frequent fluid and filter changes."

A bottle of additive does not fix colour. The 2022 manual says, "The manufacturer strongly recommends against using any special additives in the transmission." The one exception it gives is a dye used to find a leak. It also warns that chemical flushes can damage transmission components, and that such damage is not covered by the New Vehicle Limited Warranty.

Book rather than top up when you see a burnt smell, milky fluid, grit, a fresh red spot that comes back, or any change in how the truck shifts.

Where There Is a Dipstick, and Where There Is Not

On some trucks there is nothing for you to pull. The 2022 Ram 2500 and 3500 owner's manual says of the eight speed, "Routine fluid level checks are not required, therefore the transmission has no dipstick." On those trucks, the colour check and the level check are a shop job.

The two six speeds in that 2022 manual do have a dipstick, read at a normal operating temperature of 70 to 80°C. The manual says the level can only be read on a dipstick blade with indicator holes. If the blade on your truck has none, do not guess at the level: ask our service team to check it. Wipe the blade on a white paper towel to see the true colour.

The same manual warns that fluid below 10°C may not register on the dipstick, and says not to overfill.

Telling Transmission Fluid From Other Leaks

Under the truck, colour, feel and where the drip lands sort the fluids quickly. On many vehicles:

  • Transmission fluid is red to reddish brown, thin and oily, and often lands behind the engine, roughly below the front seats on a pickup.
  • Engine oil is amber when fresh and dark brown to black when old, slick between the fingers, and usually lands under the engine.
  • Coolant is often bright green, orange, pink, purple or blue, a little watery, with a sweet smell. It is toxic to pets, so wipe it up.
  • Brake fluid is clear to yellowish and slippery, often near a wheel. Treat a suspected brake fluid leak as urgent.
  • Washer fluid is often blue, thin and watery, and smells like glass cleaner.
  • Clear water with no smell is usually condensate from the air conditioning.

Our guide to an oil leak under a truck and what the spot means walks through the white cardboard test that shows where a drip lands overnight.

Why Manitoba Driving Ages Transmission Fluid

Heat is a common reason fluid darkens early, and Manitoba trucks find heat in a few ways.

Towing on Highway 1. A camper headed west past Portage toward Brandon, a boat trailer to Lake Manitoba or a grain trailer through harvest works a transmission hard for hours. In the 2022 Ram 2500 and 3500 owner's manual, the 68RFE six speed has a fluid and filter line of its own for trucks used for police, fleet or frequent trailer towing, beside the plan's general line.

Gravel and grid roads. A day of short gravel runs with a load on, between the yard, the field and the elevator, heats the transmission up and lets it cool again over and over. That manual's transmission lines do not name road surface, so if your truck lives on gravel, say so when you book.

Cold starts at minus 30. On a deep cold morning around Portage la Prairie, a stick pulled before the truck is warm tells you very little about the level. Before the snow stays is a good time to look at the colour and book anything it turns up.

FAQs

What colour should transmission fluid be?

On many vehicles, new automatic transmission fluid is red, and it darkens toward brown with use. Not every transmission uses the same fluid, so read the colour against the fluid your owner's manual names.

Is brown transmission fluid bad?

Not always. Fluid that has darkened gradually with kilometres is often just aged, so check the kilometres against your owner's manual's maintenance plan. Dark brown fluid with a burnt smell has often run hot, and that is worth a booked transmission check.

What does burnt smelling transmission fluid mean?

It usually means the fluid has been through more heat than it should, from heavy towing, slipping or a problem inside the transmission. Book a diagnosis rather than topping up, because fresh fluid does not fix worn internal parts.

How do I tell transmission fluid from other leaks?

By colour, feel and where it lands. On many vehicles, transmission fluid is red to reddish brown and oily, engine oil is amber to dark brown, coolant is bright and watery with a sweet smell, and brake fluid is clear to yellowish and slippery.

Can I check transmission fluid colour myself?

Only if your transmission has a dipstick. In the 2022 Ram 2500 and 3500 owner's manual, the eight speed has none and an authorized dealer checks the level with special service tools, while the six speeds have a dipstick read at 70 to 80°C.

Does Dunn Ram Trucks do transmission service?

Our service department at Dunn Ram Trucks in Portage la Prairie does transmission service and repair in house. Book online and tell our service team the model year, engine, transmission if you know it, kilometres and what the fluid looked like.

The Bottom Line

Red and clean is usually fine. Brown with kilometres on it is often just age. Dark with a burnt smell, milky, gritty or dripping is a booking, not a top up, and on a truck with no dipstick the check is a shop job from the start.

If what you found is anything but clean red, have our service team check the transmission and bring a photo of the paper towel or the spot on the driveway.
