Rear Defrost Not Working: What to Check

Rear defrost not working on a cold morning? Check the fuse first, then look for a broken grid line or a loose tab on the glass, and only then suspect the switch or a control module, because the simple causes are the quickest to rule out. On many vehicles one button runs the rear defrost and the heated mirrors together, so which half still works tells you where the fault sits. If you would rather hand it off, book an electrical diagnosis with our service team and tell them whether the mirrors still clear.

Picture a January morning in Portage, still dark at 7 and minus 30. You start the truck, push the rear defrost, and ten minutes later the back window is still white and both mirrors are frosted over. Backing out between a snowbank and the neighbour's car with no rear glass and no mirrors is how bumpers get bent. Manitoba Public Insurance's winter driving advice is to make sure your windows are clear of snow and ice, and a dead defrost turns that into a scraping job each morning.

The checks below hold for a car or an SUV as well as a pickup. If the windshield is your problem, our post on how to defrost your windshield covers the front glass, and our guide to heated seats not working covers the seats and the steering wheel.

Key Takeaways

  • Start with the fuse chart in your owner's manual. A blown fuse is a parts counter fix; a fuse that blows again points to a short that needs a diagnosis.
  • A frosted stripe across otherwise clear glass usually means one broken grid line. Glass that will not clear at all points to the fuse, a tab, the wiring or the switch.
  • On a vehicle where one button runs both, mirrors that heat while the rear glass stays cold point to the glass side, not the switch.
  • One cold mirror can mean its heated glass element or its connector has failed.
  • Switch, module and wiring faults need a scan tool. Our service department does diagnosis and electrical repair.

Rear Defrost Not Working: Read the Clues First

A rear defrost is a set of thin conductive lines printed on the inside of the back glass. Power comes in through a metal tab at one side, crosses the lines to a tab at the other side, and warms the glass. A heated mirror has a similar element bonded behind the mirror glass.

On many vehicles the two share one button, and your owner's manual says whether yours does. That is useful. If both halves are dead, look at what they share: the fuse, the relay, the switch and the control behind it. If one half works, the shared parts are doing their job and the fault is on the other branch.

On many vehicles the defrost also shuts itself off after a set time, so an indicator that goes out on its own is normal. Your owner's manual gives the time for your vehicle.

Check 1: The Fuse and Relay

A rear defrost draws a lot of current, so on many vehicles it runs through its own fuse and a relay. Your owner's manual carries a fuse chart that names the fuse for the rear defrost and, where it is separate, the one for the heated mirrors, along with where each box sits.

Pull the fuse and look at the metal strip inside. If it is broken, replace it only with a fuse of the rating the chart shows. A fuse is the one fix here that can start at a parts counter: ask our parts department whether they have the right one for your vehicle. If the new fuse blows the moment you switch the defrost on, or a day later, something in the circuit is shorting, and another fuse will not fix it. Book a diagnosis.

A relay is harder to judge by eye. Unless your manual shows how to test it, leave the relay to a technician.

Check 2: A Broken Grid Line or a Pulled Tab

Frost does the testing for you. Switch the defrost on with frost on the glass and watch it clear. A broken line leaves a band of white while the lines around it melt clear. Look closely along that band and you can often find the nick.

The grid lives on the inside of the glass, so the damage comes from inside the cab. An ice scraper used on the inside of the back window, a toolbox or hockey bag stacked against the glass, a ladder slid through the cab, a dog's claws: each can cut a line. Clean the inside of the glass with a soft cloth, wiping along the lines and not across them, and keep scrapers and abrasive cleaners off it.

The tabs take a beating too. If one side of the glass stays frosted, or nothing clears even with a good fuse, look at the tab at each end of the grid. A wire that has pulled off, or a tab lifted from the glass, stops the whole grid.

A single small break can sometimes be bridged with a grid repair kit; ask our parts department whether one suits your glass. A pulled tab is a different job, because the wrong method can damage the glass. Several broken lines, or a cracked window, can mean new glass, and our service department does windshield and glass replacement.

Check 3: The Sliding Rear Window on a Pickup

Where a pickup's sliding rear window carries defrost lines, the sliding pane has to get its power across a joint that moves every time you open it. That joint is one more place for the circuit to break, and forcing a pane frozen into its track can strain it.

If the fixed glass clears and the sliding centre pane stays white, the switch and fuse are doing their job and the fault is likely at the sliding pane's own connection. Let the cab warm before you open a frozen slider, and book a diagnosis if the pane stays cold.

On a vehicle with a removable hard top, the rear glass is fed through a connector that comes apart with the top. If the defrost quit right after the top went back on, check that connection first, following your owner's manual.

Check 4: The Heated Mirror Glass

With the defrost on for several minutes, the mirror glass should feel warm to the back of your fingers and the frost should start clearing. If the rear glass clears and both mirrors stay cold, look at what the mirrors share: on vehicles where the mirrors have their own fuse, check it, then book a diagnosis. If one mirror heats and the other does not, the problem is likely that mirror's element or the connector behind the glass.

A cracked mirror glass, from a branch or a scraper pushed too hard, can break the element behind it. On many mirrors the heated glass can be replaced without the whole mirror housing. Ask our parts department about the mirror glass for your vehicle and bring your VIN.

Check 5: The Switch and the Module

On many newer vehicles the defrost button does not carry the heavy current at all. It sends a request to a control module, which switches the relay. That is why a dead button, or a button that lights while nothing heats, is a job for a scan tool. A technician can read the stored codes and command the defrost on directly, which separates a switch fault from a module or wiring fault without guessing.

This is where a parts counter visit stops helping. Our service department does diagnosis and electrical repair, including modules.

What the Usual Fix Involves

Once the cause is confirmed, the fix is a fuse of the right rating, a grid line repair, a tab reattached to the glass, new mirror glass, a repaired connection at the sliding pane, or a switch, wiring or module repair. Where the glass itself is damaged, it is a glass replacement.

FAQs

Why do my heated mirrors work when the rear window will not clear?

On a vehicle where one button runs both, the button and the parts the two share are working, so the fault is on the glass side: a pulled tab, broken grid lines, the feed wire or the sliding pane's connection. Check the tabs, then book a diagnosis if they are tight.

How do I tell if a defrost grid line is broken?

Switch the defrost on with frost on the glass and watch it clear. A broken line leaves a band of frost while the lines around it melt, and a close look along that band often finds the nick.

Can I repair a rear defrost grid myself?

A single small break can sometimes be bridged with a grid repair kit; ask our parts department whether one suits your glass. A pulled tab, several broken lines or cracked glass are jobs for a technician, and our service department does electrical repair and glass replacement.

Why does my rear defrost shut off by itself?

On many vehicles that is normal, because the defrost runs on a timer and switches off after a set time. Your owner's manual gives the time for your vehicle; push the button again if the glass still needs it.

Can I keep driving with a dead rear defrost?

Only once the rear glass and both mirrors are clear enough to see through; clearing them by hand before each trip is the stopgap. If frost or fog builds back up and blocks your view, pull over and clear it, and book a diagnosis before the deep cold arrives.

Where can I get a rear defrost repaired near Portage la Prairie?

Our service department at Dunn Ram Trucks does diagnosis and electrical repair, and glass replacement if the glass itself is damaged. Book online and tell our service team whether the mirrors still heat.

The Bottom Line

Rear defrost not working often starts with something small: a fuse, a nicked grid line or a tab knocked loose by cargo. Use the mirrors to narrow it down on a vehicle where one button runs both, check the sliding pane on a pickup, and leave the switch and module to a scan tool. Fix it before the first minus 30 morning, not after.

When you are ready, book your rear defrost and heated mirror check online and tell our service team what clears and what does not.
